Commentary: The Purpose of Tantric Sex
The Yin-Yang of Shiva-Shakti
28 Nov 2003
Namaste Pranav & Fellow Jnanis & Friends,
I have been watching this conversation for a while now, about sex & enlightenment in your yahoo interest group. It's by no coincidence, as I am contemplating the value/purpose/meaning of why 1-2 self-realized, (enlightened), beings would feel compelled to continue sexual relations with 'another'. I have received 2 answers fairly quickly, which I wanted to share with you. You seem like a pretty wise person, so please honor me by reading about the below 'problem' on my hands.... perhaps you have some insights about sex and monks?! I know there have been many recognized saints and siddhas who were also married, through the history of India, and even now, there and in the US, ( Solomae Sananda, eg., is a confirmed siddha,/saint and has a husband and 2 teenage boys and lives as a family in California).
Being 'shaiva/non-dualistic advaitia' of the nityananda lineage/siddha family and a shaktipat satguru with my own sangham, (though new.. about 1 year out from moksha/nirvikulpa samadhi stabilized), I contemplate the missionwork and the guise or role I should play in best fulfilling this dharma. And herein lies the challenge, the satguru is fully aware that there they are Self and not self (the citta/prakviti), beyond labels and cultural filters, beyond role-playing, but they must assume a role, a label, a culture in order to communicate with their sangham/ the world. Without objectification, the ordinary human mind does not accept/comprehend. Therein lies the dilemma, and the inherent cause of so much consequent bitterness, war and untold numbers of atrocities in the name of mere labels/mental constructs which are illusionary to begin with! How to teach the Highest Truth within the framework of multiple dimensions of chakra levels (levels of world-views / paradigms / god-consciousness / god-heads / sephiroths)? How to pick SOME cultural model or system of mental constructs for the purposes of facilitating mental comprehension/brain processing, without the entrapment of duality and exclusionary consequence; as a label automatically excludes any and all other labels. The joke is there is no such thing to begin with. As Baba Nityananda says, its all dust!
So, onto sex, spiritual preceptors and enlightenment. Kashmir Shaivism is a conglomeration/synthesis/integration of many if not all other faiths, including Buddhism and the various other many sects of India. It is deeply embracing of abhinavaguptas treatise on tantra in his tantraloka writings, still not available in english. With the grace-bestowing power of God through the spiritual preceptor, however, the shakti kundalini/citti (Divine Mother/ Universal Mind), enlightens us easefully and naturally along the way, especially of one is a jnani yogi. So, being such, I received to pieces of information about the role of tantra and the guru/disciple. Each person is a disciple (ego) and the Guru (God-within). Tantra for the seeker facilitates the descent of Grace (Shakti) for the ascension into the Absolute, and 'sex', either intercourse or non-penetration/ non-touch, (according to our lineage teachings/vedas) with the fully qualified/confirmed spiritual preceptor and his/her disciple, is the means to this ascension through the preceptor. This is the only acceptable arrangement, as it is supremely impersonal. One of the partners must already be 'there', as it is a 'resonant fit' or 'vibrational entrainment' process through energetic bonding between the 2 bodies (and all its subtleties). It's a well established fact of physics that lower vibration always entrains, or becomes/ matches the higher oscillatory vibration.
Now, the other inner knowledge that was given me about why 2 saints would even want to continue conjegation in any way.....is that this field of energy that is created in the union of opposites between a male and female saint (siddha, spiritual preceptor) can be likened to a nuclear fission generator and rivals the union of Shiva and shakti themselves. This creative power is used to bless and 'zap' everything, as these beings are All, the Absolute, in and beyond the Void, but also here, with the power of harnessed shakti and intention as everything and everybody. If only we had more of these unions on behalf of all animate and inanimate consciousness on earth and in the universe to uplift and purify us! This dynamic is like a great sweeping vortex, kinda reminds me of black holes now, isn't that funny, lol, and probably not too far from the truth.
As an aside, it is well known amongst disciples of deceased masters that on the death (mahasamadhi) and anniversary of their master's passing away, a vortex of ascension is created, which they benefit from due to their 'conjugated bonding' to that saint. This is how 'Jesus' saved and purified mankind back then and the reason orthodox Christians place enormous significance of his death, not birth. I hear from many sources that upon his resurrection, he did marry Mary Magdeline, and there is evidence of this somewhere in the northern region of India with tomb inscriptions, etc... who knows? Maybe he and Mary got married in order to continue the purification processing of the manifest and unmanifest worlds, and continue to do so to this day?! Even the Vedas, from which Buddha himself emerged from, glorify the sacred union of the masculine and feminine aspects of God, as this creates a portal of sorption into nothing/all, zero/infinity. The Bhagavad Gita also talks of not trying to resist the 3 gunas, similarly to what you write about in 'The Nun'. It says, rightfully, that as long as we incarnated and have a warm body, we will have to submit to the effects of action, action being scriptural in the sense of being of the 3 gunas.
So the body will need food, water, metabolism, excretion, movement, sleep and touch/sensory stimulation, for normal psychological growth & development, and for health & well-being. It is like a mindless automaton, a puppy, that knows no better, and its ours to look after and keep it happy. After all, the purpose of living on this earth is to enjoy it as heaven. The Guru Gita (abridged version of the Skanda Purunas, of the Vedas), tells us that the 4 goals of life is dharma (righetous action), wealth, pleasure & moksha, (liberation), after all. The Gita cautions us to not resist the 3 gunas, but to allow them when they happen, as when an arrow is released from the bow, there is nothing more for us to do but to watch it hit its target. The quality of our bow & arrow, technique and target selection, however, is entirely our own choice and responsibility. There is nothing inherently good or evil about these. It is simply a choice of whether to target the darkness, or the light of Self, as both as still the Self.
So, this explains the married monks idea. It is interesting to also observe, with the societal backlash to the idea of Guru being a celebate monk, (the puritanical vestages of western civilization not recognizing the inherent orgasmic/creative nature of Nature in the ascension process, i.e. tantra), where the Gurus reputation always seems to crash & burn when they are 'caught' having 'affairs', that new gurus don't go there anymore ~ that is, they dont call themselves gurus anymore, (but they are still gurus, fitting the scriptural definition/role/fxn, ie, none the less!). So much for labels ~ whatever works, huh? So, I am a shaktipat master/ satguru/mentor/friend/lover/spiritual preceptor/minister/swami/monk/meditation teacher/yoga instructor/spiritual counselor, yadda yadda yadda....but I am not, lol. Call me what you want, the path & teachings will be the same no matter what, as shakti & tantra ( Holy Spirit & the Trinity, essentially), is life and the creative, nuclear power-plant that drives the ascension process back to home.
Personally, I am satisfied with these inspired answers to my questions about sex, enlightenment and the Guru (God-within). Given that all people are at any of 7 major levels of god-consciousness (chakra levels), they will comprehend and filter this information differently, which is fine. The task is to trust & accept the highest truth, (the writings & teachings of saints & siddhas/scriptures), even if it is incomprehensible and seems therefore to be judged wrong by the less aware at that time.
Blessings,
Devi Nostrumananda
